How to understand Management, Organizations and the Management of Organizational Change

Participants - who should attend?

Managers and staff of international and local organizations and institutions who have managerial/leadership or advisory roles and functions. Particularly managers, team and project leaders, staff members and consultants who are involved in international development cooperation and who want to improve their knowledge and skills in organizational diagnosis and preparing their organizations towards change. Counterparts and advisory staff (preferably small project groups of 3-4 members) who are involved both in sector tasks, organizational consultancy or any managerial task related to changes in their organization.

Because of the course design – in which projects/programmes are central to the learning process – we suggest that each project/programme will be represented by at least two participants.

Objectives - why should you attend?

This orientation seminar is designed to provide practice-oriented insights into the concept of management, the workings of organizations and the cross-cultural context of development cooperation projects and programmes as an EAST-WEST cooperation endeavour. Thus it will enable participants to more systematically understand their organizations and to become better prepared for the engineering of organizational change processes.

Content - what will you learn and experience?

After the training programme participants will:

have an in-depth understanding of the concept of management and the roles and functions of a manager
be familiar with basic issues of management and related instruments, such as "management" versus "administration", "management" versus "leadership", motivation, leadership styles
have an in-depth understanding of what organizations are and how they are functioning
be familiar with basic issues of organizations / organizational change and related instruments, such as organizational analysis, life cycle of organizations, organizational change, the management of change
be familiar with cross cultural issues: the EAST-WEST differences in management and organization

Theory input presentations, discussion/dialogue, individual and group exercises, case studies, sharing of experiences, group coaching
